Tintin and Snowy

A small white dog who saves the day

Tintin’s lifelong companion is Tintin, or Milou in the original French. Snowy is a Wire Fox Terrier though unusually he is pure white unlike his real life counter parts who tend to have brown patches. The breed is not very popular nowadays as it was a hunting dog and not suited for city life. Among the less desirable traits of all fox terriers are their energy, digging, stalking and chasing of other animals, and yelping bark. To this list, Snowy can add drinking whisky, particularly Loch Lomond whisky.

Though Snowy was Tintin’s constant companion, his rolled changed over the years. Originally Snowy provided dry wit and one-liners to balance his master’s constant positive outlook but when Captain Haddock joined the books, Snowy tended to provide light relief by drinking whisky or chasing cats.

The bond between master and pet, was an extreme one. Many times, Tintin risks his own life to save Snowy and vice versa. They are rarely seen apart and Tintin takes Snowy into the most unsuitable situations that enviably lead to Tintin having to rescue his dog. Tintin’s devotion to his dog is recongised by his friends, including Professor Calculus who designs a doggy space suit, just so that Snowy can travel to the moon with Tintin.
