My latest project, 6d6Fireball.com, is slight change in direction for me. Rather than just being a blog it will be selling fantasy miniatures for Dungeons and Dragons that we manufacture. Its a combination of my web skills, a friend’s knowledge of manufacturing and our joint love of role playing games.

At the moment the site is very basic blog with only one or two posts but it will be growing very rapidly. It is involving extensive planning as there are a large number of keywords available but generally the amount of traffic they each attract is small. So our policy is one of creating sticky content (see Friendly Affordable SEO) but will require as vast amount writing. Of course links mater as well as content so I will be making extensive use of Micelife.

My latest blog project is Superflat Art. Most people are not aware of Superflat but it is one of the hottest areas in art. Its a Japanese pop-art movement that blends manga / anime imagery with social commentary on the otaku (the obsessive fan-boy culture). Artists such as Takashi Murakami, Chiho Aoshima, Mahomi Kunikata, Yoshitomo Nara, Aya Takano, Koji Morimoto, Hitoshi Tomizawa, Henmaru Machino and many others from Kaikai Kiki Co. and Studio 4°C workshops are all part of the Superflat movement.

From an SEO view point the keyword is Superflat though all the artists names are secondary keywords. The domain was purchased about a week ago, and the first posts on the site, a couple of days later. I’ve just added Google analytics, a sitemap and submitted the URL to Yahoo and Google. Based on past experience, the site should start appearing in the listings with the next week.

All ten of the Tintin and all ten of dyslexia articles now show up. Today is is the 24th September so it has taken almost two weeks since they were spidered by the Googlebot. However they are not showing up when you do a link search on Google. e.g. ‘LINK:domainname.com’. This isn’t surprising as the link search is always inaccurate with many links missing. Also not surprisingly, there has been no impact on Myomancy’s and Tintin Movie’s ranking in Google for the target keywords.

Four of the articles from the Tintin and Dyslexia experiments have appeared in Google.

One was created on the 3rd September and spidered by Google on the 10th. The other three were created on the 4th September and spidered on the 11th. Today is the 19th September so its taken seven days to get spidered and another eight or nine days before appearing in Google search results.

There seems no pattern to which articles have appeared. Nine articles also written on the 3rd and spidered on the 10th have not yet appeared. Hopefully these will start showing up in the index over the next couple of days. There has been notable change in the target’s position in the search results and are not showing up as a link when I do a Google search for ‘link:<website URL>’

Time will tell if its as effective or not.

For reference, my linking strategy was to use one link to the original article, generally using the articles title as the link text. The other two links I used ‘dyslexia’ as my linked text but one I sent to the Myomancy front page and one to the dyslexia category on Myomancy. It will be interesting to see which page, if either of them appears in the Google results. Out of all the posts about dyslexia on Myomancy, Google currently picks a page on dyslexia tests for the search results. I have no idea why.

One of my websites is Myomancy, a site all about ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia. I’ve been running it for about four years and there is a lot of unique content on the site. Its gets a fair amount of traffic from certain keywords but I’ve never been able to crack the big ones ‘ADHD’, ‘Autism’ and ‘Dyslexia’. In fact for a long time you could not even find Myomancy on those words, no matter how far down the list you looked. This is highly frustrating as its hard to fight your way up the rankings if you aren’t even on the list. Nowadays I have made a small amount of progress. For ‘Dyslexia’ I’m around about 400th in the Google results. For ‘ADHD’ I’m about the 500th and on ‘Autism’ I checked all the way down to 900th and Myomancy still was not there.

So I’m going to try an experiment to boost my rankings for ‘Dyslexia’. I don’t want to write any articles about dyslexia as I have written lots on the subject and anything I have to say about the subject I would post on Myomancy itself. Neither do I want to build links reusing existing articles from Myomancy as the effects of duplicate content are not clear. Some SEO commentators say its OK to have duplicate content out there as long as its doesn’t appear on the same site as the original. Others advise that duplicate can have a serious negative impact.

What I’m going to do is a halfway house. I’m going to grab all my dyslexia related posts on Myomancy and create ten new articles based on them. I plan to quote chunks of the original articles and add a few new sentences to give the extracts some context. In short I’m going to create a fairly typical blog post. In each article on MiceLife, I’m going to link back to Myomancy using the keyword Dyslexia.

What will be interesting about the results of this experiment is whether it makes any difference to Myomancy’s ranking for the other keywords of ‘Autism’ and ‘ADHD’. Do links from different keywords harm your ranking or is simply any link is a good link? Lets find out.

I spent yesterday writing the ten promised articles on Tintin. All told it came to about 4000 words in day and it felt like a real slog. I suspect the quality of some of the later articles will have suffered but time will tell for now we have to wait. The articles will be picked up by Google in under a week and should start having an effect on TintinMovie.Org’s ranking in two to four weeks.

I set up TintinMovie.org when I heard that Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson where going to direct the new films. As a life long Tintin fan I was excited by the prospect of Tintin coming to screen but as an SEO entrepreneur I was excited by the opportunities it present. Two feature films by big name directors will generate a lot of publicity and net traffic when the films are released. So I saw a chance to get in early and establish a Tintin movie focused site in the Google top-ten. Currently this generates very little traffic and revenue but if the films become hits, the traffic will rapidly increase.

My plan seems to have worked as Tintin Movie is currently number one in Google for “Tintin Movie”. Investigating further, I find that the site is also about 30th on the keyword “Tintin”. This is a surprise because I did not think a brand new site would be able to compete with well established commercial and fan Tintin sites. So my target now is to get Tintin Movie into the top ten for “Tintin” using articles posted on MiceLife.

Unlike most sites tackling a new keyword, I don’t need to tune my site for the new keyword as the word “Tintin” was part of my original target “Tintin Movie”. All I need to do is write the articles and build the links.

Checking out the current Tintin top ten, number one is the offical Tintin website. Not surprisingly, this site has hundreds of incoming links. Next is Wikipedia, followed by Tintinologist, a fan site with about 40 incoming links. After that are various official Tintin sites (shops, TV shows etc). The last few in the top ten are Amazon.com, a website for comic book covers and a tattoo studio in France called Tin-tin. Neither the specific Tintin Amazon page or the specific Tintin comic book covers page has any incoming links (though the sites generally have lots) and the tattoo studio has about ten incoming links.

My target is going to be to write ten articles linked back to Tintin Movie. This should be enough, along with all the other SEO techniques, to get me close to or into the top ten. The plan is to write an article about each of the major characters using information from Wikipedia and my own knowledge. So I’m off to get writing.
